FT220X USB to 4-Bit SPI (FT1248 Bridge)

Download the FT220X USB to 4-Bit SPI (FT1248 Bridge) here. Note that the FT1248 Bridge is a type of bridge chip developed by FTDI that allows for communication between a microcontroller or other digital device and devices using the FT1248 protocol. The 4-bit SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) refers to a variant of the SPI communication protocol that uses a 4-bit data bus instead of the standard 8-bit data bus.

FT220X USB to 4-Bit SPI (FT1248 Bridge)

Offering a compact bridge to 4-Bit SPI/FT1248 link. Likewise this USB 2.0 Full Speed IC provides a seamless link solution. The chip functions as a FT1248 slave. In addition to supporting data rates of up to 500kBit/s. This while having low power usage (8mA). With the included and complete FT-X series feature set. Likewise the FT220X helps with the fast and easy addition of USB functionality to system designs, using the FT1248 link. This much like the FT201X Full Speed USB to I2C Bridge which uses the same protocol as well as the FT200XD Full Speed USB to I2C Bridge.

Hardware Features

Featuring the FT1248 serial parallel link in 1, 2, or 4-bit wide mode. Note that this device offers many data transfer options. In 1-bit mode, it operates similarly to an SPI slave. The chip takes care of the entire USB protocol. Likewise removing the FT220X USB to 4-Bit SPI (FT1248 Bridge)need for USB-specific software programming.

With its fully integrated 2048 byte MTP Memory and device descriptors and CBUS I/O. Configuration can be easily stored. The chip also includes clock generation, requiring no external crystal. In addition also offers optional clock output selection for a easy link with other MCUs or FPGAs.

Data can be transferred at rates up to 500 kByte/s, and the chip includes a 512 byte receive buffer and 512 byte transmit buffer with buffer smoothing technology for better data throughput. FTDI’s royalty-free Virtual Com Port (VCP) and Direct (D2XX) drivers remove the need for USB driver development in most cases.

Additional options include a configurable CBUS I/O pin, pre-programmed unique USB serial number, support for various USB configurations, an integrated +3.3V level converter for USB I/O, and true 3.3V CMOS drive output and TTL input. It operates with I/O levels from 1.8V to 3.3V and is 5V tolerant for inputs.

The chip provides changeable I/O pin output drive strength. This including battery charger detection for better charging abilities, and includes an integrated power-on-reset circuit. Internal 3.3V/1.8V LDO regulators ensure reliable operation.

With low operating current (8mA typical) and USB suspend current (125uA typical), it offers energy-efficient performance. It uses low USB bandwidth and is usable with UHCI/OHCI/EHCI host controllers. It is compliant with USB 2.0 Full Speed and can operate in a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

The chip is available in 16-pin SSOP and QFN packages, both of which are RoHS compliant.

Application Usage

With its USB to SPI link operating in 1-bit mode, this device allows easy communication between USB and SPI systems. It serves as a better solution for USB software and hardware encryption dongles, allowing secure data transmission.

Moreover, the device offers dedicated charger port (DCP) detection, allowing for easy battery charging at higher currents. This function significantly reduces charge times, allow for faster and more easier charging experiences.
