In comparison to its predecessors, the FT245R introduces a new function that effectively combines two functionalities into a single chip, making it a “2-in-1” solution for certain application areas. During the manufacturing process, a unique number, known as the FTDIChip-ID, is burned into the device. This number can be read over USB and forms the foundation of a security dongle, which can be used to safeguard customer application software from unauthorized copying.
The FT245R is available in compact 28-Lead SSOP and QFN-32 packages, both of which are Pb-free (RoHS compliant).
The Single chip USB to parallel FIFO bidirectional data transfer interface provides numerous features and capabilities. With the entire USB protocol handled on the chip, there is no need for USB-specific firmware programming, simplifying the development process. It offers a simple 4-wire handshake interface, making it easy to interface with MCU / PLD / FPGA logic.
For data transfer, the interface supports a high rate of up to 1 Megabyte per second using D2XX Direct Drivers, while VCP Drivers enable a rate of up to 300 kilobytes per second. FTDI’s royalty-free VCP and D2XX drivers eliminate the need for USB driver development in most cases.
The interface incorporates the new USB FTDIChip-ID feature, allowing for enhanced security and protection. It includes FIFO receive and transmit buffers with buffer smoothing technology, facilitating high data throughput. The receive buffer has a size of 256 bytes, while the transmit buffer has a size of 128 bytes. An adjustable receive buffer timeout is also available.
Synchronous and asynchronous bit bang mode interface options are provided, enabling the use of the data bus as a general-purpose I/O port with the RD# and WR# strobes. In addition the interface also includes an integrated 1024-bit internal EEPROM for storing USB VID, PID, serial number, and product description strings. Additional features include support for USB suspend / resume through the PWREN# pin and Wake Up pin function. AVCC supply filtering is also integrated, eliminating the need for a separate AVCC pin and external R-C filter. In terms of USB functionality. Likewise the interface supports bulk transfer mode and is compatible with UHCI / OHCI / EHCI host controllers.
